The surge in time of app usage ignited during the COVID pandemic has still not been exhausted as users are spending a significant portion of smartphone usage on mobile apps

Apps have always been vital for the smartphone as they attract a significant part of mobile usability. However, the COVID pandemic catalyzed the use of mobile applications. During that phase, everything, whether it be related to education, job, training, extracurricular activities, courses, sports classes, music classes, or communication, required a mobile app. However, now in 2022, when it seems to be returning to normal, it doesn’t seem like people are ready to abandon this habit.

The daily time spent on mobile applications varies greatly among the countries and markets; however, there are 13 big markets in which users spend more than 4-5 hours of their daily smartphone exposure on the apps. The markets include Indonesia, Brazil, Singapore, Mexico, India, Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Russia,  Turkey, the U.S., and the U.K.

Some popular apps that played the core role in this spike in mobile usage included Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, Telegram, Spotify, Amazon, and Netflix.

The average spending time on apps in Singapore during the second quarter of 2020 was 4.1 hours, which increased to 5.7 hours in the same quarter of 2022. Similarly, Australia registered a daily app usage time of 3.6 hours in Q2, 2020, which has increased to 4.9 hours in Q2, 2022. Both have marked a rise of 40% in the span of two years.

Other markets have also shown growth but comparatively slower. Indonesia (+10%), India (+5%), Japan (+5%), Canada (+20%), Russia (+10%), the U.S. (+5%), U.K. (+5%), China (+5%) and Germany (+10%), Mexico (0%), has been the growth rate of rest of the markets. However, with a minimal app usage growth rate, these markets seem to be returning toward the pre-covid levels.

So, the trend of using mobile apps is going to increase steadily. If you are thinking to build an app then get in touch with us.
