Apple is preparing to display search advertisements in its Maps app on the iPhone beginning in 2019. In a new report, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests that this may not remain the case for much longer.  In his newsletter, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg stated that he believes engineering work has already begun, and the firm is brooding over this idea.

In further support of this above statement, Gurman commented,

I believe the engineering work is already underway to launch search ads in the Apple Maps app, and we should begin to see it be implemented sometime next year.

Additionally, the tech giant intends to display advertisements on the Program Store’s “Today” page and in a new “You May Also Like” area at the bottom of app listings, while banner advertisements are presented in Apple’s News and Stocks apps.

Some of the company’s apps, like News and Stocks, already display advertisements, and the report indicates that this may soon extend to Maps, Podcasts, and Apple Books. Using these ads, developers can market their apps on the App Store. Apple will charge businesses a fixed fee to be listed in local searches on Maps, for instance, or to have their apps featured more prominently on the App Store. Apple earns over $4 billion annually from the advertisements it now displays within its ecosystem, and the company aspires to boost this number to double digits. The ad placement mechanism appears comparable to that of Google, which displays advertising when you search for an app or highlights locations when you search for an area on Maps.
